AI Decoder: Words You Keep Seeing. Few People Actually Understand. Part 2
AI Decoder #2: What Is a Token?
AI Words You Keep Seeing. Few People Actually Understand.
If you've used ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any other AI platform, you've probably heard the word token.
You may have seen messages like:
- "You've reached your token limit."
- "This model supports one million tokens."
- "Token usage affects pricing."
It sounds technical, but it's actually one of the easiest AI concepts to understand.
The Word
A token is the basic unit an AI model reads, processes, and generates.
Think of it as the currency AI uses to understand and create language.
What Most People Think It Means
A token is a word.
Not exactly.
Sometimes a token is a whole word. Sometimes it's part of a word. Sometimes it's punctuation, a number, or even a space.
AI doesn't read language the way humans do. It breaks everything into tokens before it can process it.
What It Actually Means
Every conversation you have with an AI is converted into tokens.
Your question becomes tokens. The AI's response becomes tokens. Even the instructions you gave earlier in the conversation become tokens.
The model reads those tokens, predicts the next one, then the next, until it completes its response.
Everything an LLM does begins and ends with tokens.
A Simple Analogy
Imagine you're paying for a road trip with poker chips.
Every mile costs a few chips. The farther you travel, the more chips you spend.
Tokens work the same way.
The longer your prompt or instruction, the more tokens you use. The longer the AI's response, the more tokens it generates.
Every conversation has a budget.
Why It Matters
Tokens determine how much information an AI can keep in mind at one time.
They also influence speed, cost, and performance.
If you exceed the model's token limit, it has to forget older parts of the conversation or stop processing additional information.
That's why long chats sometimes lose context or why large documents must be split into smaller pieces.
The Mistake Almost Everyone Makes
People think they're limited by words.
They're not.
They're limited by tokens.
A short sentence with technical terms may use more tokens than you expect. A large PDF, source code, or legal contract can consume hundreds of thousands of tokens very quickly.
Understanding tokens helps you write better prompts, manage context, and choose the right model for the job.
The Bottom Line
Tokens are the language AI actually understands.
You write in sentences. The model reads tokens.
Once you understand that, concepts like context windows, pricing, memory, and model performance become much easier to understand.
Next AI Decoder: What Is a Hallucination?
TL;DR: A token is the basic unit AI models use to process language. It's not always a whole word but can be parts of words, punctuation, or spaces. Understanding token limits is crucial because they dictate how much information an AI can process, affecting cost, speed, and context retention in conversations.
